United States removes Syria from its state-sponsors-of-terrorism list

On 24 August 2026 the United States rescinded Syria's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, after the 45-day congressional review period that began with the president's notification to Congress on 8 July 2026.
The designation had stood for some 46 years. Its removal leaves three countries on the list: Cuba, Iran and North Korea. The same announcement delisted the Nusrah Front as a terrorist group.
The Syrian government describes the decision as removing the last major obstacle to investment in the country. The US State Department said the step recognised commitments by the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa to distance the country from international terrorism.
Rescinding this designation does not by itself lift every other restriction on dealings with Syria; the rescission notice is published by the State Department.
