US broadens the scope of Iran-related secondary sanctions

Iran · 5 days ago

On 24 August 2026 the US Treasury announced a broadened sanctions campaign named Operation Economic Outcast, targeting international entities it says facilitate Iranian trade in shipping, oil, cryptocurrency, gold and aviation.

The announced tranche covers close to 60 corporations, individuals and vessels across multiple jurisdictions, among them the UAE, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Switzerland.

The Treasury has not so far penalised Iran's trading partners themselves. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration is giving parties "the opportunity to remedy bad behaviour", and that the president is contacting world leaders with specific requests to stop trading with Iran.

This file moves quickly, and the authority on it is the Office of Foreign Assets Control's own publications.
