Morocco suspends its LNG terminal and pipeline tenders

On 2 February 2026 Morocco's Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development suspended the receipt and opening of bids for its liquefied natural gas terminal and associated pipeline tenders, a month after launching them.

The project, worth close to $1bn, covers a strategic LNG terminal at the Nador West Med port on the Mediterranean and a pipeline linking it to the existing Maghreb–Europe Gas Pipeline, plus lines connecting the port to major industrial areas.

The ministry attributed the decision to "new parameters and assumptions related to this project" and to constant changes in the global gas market requiring a review. Reports say the finance ministry raised concerns over budget exposure, procedural shortcomings and legal uncertainty while Morocco's gas regulatory framework remains pending. Rabat says it intends to resume the project "in due course".
