IMF projects 3.8% growth for Algeria in 2026 and urges fiscal consolidation

Algeria · 7 weeks ago

An IMF mission led by Charalambos Tsangarides concluded the 2026 Article IV consultation with Algeria after visiting Algiers from 16 to 30 June, publishing its concluding statement on 6 July 2026.

The Fund projects GDP growth of 3.8% in 2026, up from the 2.9% forecast in October 2025 — an upward revision of 0.9 percentage points. The near-term outlook is broadly positive as higher hydrocarbon prices support export and fiscal revenues.

Over the medium term the mission expects growth to moderate, warning that continued high deficits would raise public debt and gradually erode reserves. The Fund calls for sizable fiscal consolidation as buffers erode.
